College Learning Assessment Test draws criticism from AU professors

01/30/2011

A study of over 2,300 undergraduate students from 24 different universities found that 45 percent of students show no significant improvement in critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing from the span of their freshman to sophomore years.

However, the study did show more significant improvement over four years than two.

The objective of the College Learning Assessment Test (CLA) is to measure the critical thinking and writing ability of college students. But is the CLA an accurate representation of what it is trying to assess?

The Confucius Institute: cultural understanding

12/05/2010

The sixth century Chinese philosopher Confucius once said, “I am not one who was born in the possession of knowledge; I am one who is fond of antiquity, and earnest in seeking it there.”

If international understanding is the breakfast of a student’s well balanced education, the Confucius Institute is serving up a double helping at Alfred University. The table is set, choose your courses.

ITS hopes to update AU with better broadband

12/01/2010

ITS director Gary Roberts hosted a presentation about the upcoming broadband upgrade coming to Alfred at Howell Hall on Nov. 30.

It took three years of actively partnering with different groups to provide Alfred with better internet connectivity. AU ITS supported a number of grant proposals among local technology groups, including Finger Lakes Technology Group (FLTG), Southern Tier West Regional Planning and Development Board and the Independent Optical Network (ION).

AU star: Gustavo Galvan, Jr.

12/06/2010

Diversification within his trade and an open mind have led BFA graduate Gustavo Galvan to success in his most recent vocational successes as clothes and costume producer to the stars.

“Learn as much as possible, don’t just focus in one area of art,” said Galvan in recounting the type of malleability that has brought him success.

Galvan graduated from Alfred University in May of 2009 with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, which has served him well in turning aspirations and talent into a true occupation.

Safety on campus

12/05/2010

Is it safe on campus? The answer is yes. Recent events on and around campus seem to have people nervous, but rest assured, there is nothing to be worried about. For most of the events that have occurred, the student body has received a “Timely Warning” e-mail relaying details of what took place. But when discussing campus safety, Alfred has one of the lower on-campus crime rates. In addition, while a majority of the “Timely Warning” emails contain legitimate concerns, many of these concerns do not take place on campus.

Controversy or continuity at the WLC

11/01/2010

Developed out of an initiative to provide Alfred University students with women’s leadership styles, the Women’s Leadership Center is currently facing alternate perspectives on education.

“Our hopes were that our sisters would wish to further the noblest of Greek causes, the development of leadership skills,” stated AU Trustee, Greek Task Force member, and founding member of the WLC Advisory Board Chris Kulp, in explaining the WLC’s foundation.

According to Kulp, the Greek Task Force took note of the vacancies that would be left by loosing Greek life.

Merrill Field rejuvenated

09/07/2010

A $1.2 million renovation project at Alfred University’s Merrill Field has resulted in a new turf field and bleachers after a summer long construction.
“With the improvements to the grandstand and press box and the installation of the new field surface, Merrill Field will be one of the finest outdoor facilities in Division III,” Dr. Charles Edmondson, AU president, commented.

"Connected" youth play major role in Tunisian Revolution

02/14/2011

Tunisian youths, and their use of social media outlets, played a significant role in the success of the Tunisian Revolution, stated Dr. Zakia Robana, assistant professor of French at Alfred University, at Global Awareness Roundtable focusing on her experiences and knowledge of the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia, on Feb. 9, in the Knight Club.
“Facebook and Twitter and Wiki Leaks played a big role in the success of the revolution and I think they can play a big role in the success of democracy,” Robana said to the crowd.

AU ushered into a less certain financial era

02/12/2011

Colleges and universities throughout the state of the New York are evermore finding themselves on the brink of a mandated evolution, hastened still by proposed budget cuts to New York State funding.
“Every institution, whether educational or not, must change, must adapt to its environment,” said President of Alfred University Charley Edmondson nearly a year and a half ago to a community about to witness its foundation rattled by recession.

Progress made for lighting efficiency on campus

01/30/2011

Lighting on campus is efficient, according to Mike Neiderbach, executive director of capital projects for the university.

Neiderbach explained that lighting efficiency is accomplished through a combination of luminous efficiency, lighting intensity and hours of operation tests. The most difficult variable to control is cited as luminous efficiency. LEDs, fluorescents and sodium vapor lighting overlap when comparing cost to energy saved.

Debate over HIV/AIDS epidemic yet to be heard

12/05/2010

Dr. Mark Dawson, 18th annual Burdick Lecture presenter, contrasted UNAIDS publications that note successful remediation of the epidemic with stark historical facts.

In its latest study of 63 countries, UNAIDS found, “Among young people in the fifteen most severely affected countries, the rate of new HIV infections has fallen by more than 25 percent.”

The Cliks rocked AU with a cause

12/02/2010

Lucas Silveira is the type of person who can appreciate a small town like Alfred. Especially, as he said during his concert on Nov. 20, “a town with a bell tower you can actually play!” Silveira spoke in Nevins in the afternoon and then the band played a concert that evening in the Knight Club. The events were co-sponsored by Spectrum and Student Activities Board as part of Transgender Awareness Week, a new program on campus this year.

A few sane people

10/31/2010

Alfred University students bussed a Drawn to Diversity contingent to the National Mall, Washington D.C. to attend John Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear Saturday, Oct. 30.

“Yes we can, but not overnight,” was President Barack Obama’s response to many of John Stewart’s barrages Wednesday night before the Stewart/Colbert rally.

AU community advocates for gay rights

10/17/2010

In response to hate crimes and heated rhetoric related against gay rights and communities, Alfred University students are doing more of the same and achieving an even greater impact.

Tragedy and misunderstanding are nothing new to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, nor is confronting adversity a new issue on the AU campus. However, students are finding the best thing to do under these circumstances is not the most radical.

10/17/2010

Vice President of Student Affairs Kathy Woughter announced the procurement of funds for the $8.5 million recreation center at the Oct. 6 AU Student Senate meeting, addressing the growing student need of space for activities.

“When it comes to athletics facilities, we lag behind,” AU President Charley Edmondson commented at the Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on Oct. 2. “This will give us the kind of facilities that are sorely lacking here.”
