A (Killer) Almost Queen concert inspires Powell streaker

05/04/2009

The Queen tribute band Almost Queen performed outside Powell Campus Center Monday night, stirring up the crowd and inspiring a streaker to dance on top of Powell Campus Center.

Authorities apprehended the streaker shortly after he made his exit atop the campus center, bearing all to what was arguably the largest, and rowdiest, crowd for any concert this past year.

The band was scheduled for the last day of classes, and students took full advantage of the time to let loose.

More information on the streaker and a fuller story on the concert will be added to the site soon.

Office for Civil Rights seeks student opinions, denies Fiat access

05/01/2009

The Office for Civil Rights continued its investigation into the University’s alleged unfair treatment of female athletes and their teams April 28 and 29, but also interfered with the student newspaper’s ability to report the issue.

During its "fact-gathering" process, investigators held two open-door meetings for all AU students in the Kenyon-Allen Room in Powell Campus Center. Women were questioned on April 28 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and men were welcome to attend April 29 during the same hours.

Following the April 20 article in the Fiat Lux titled, “Civil Rights office to Investigate AU,” the Fiat Lux obtained more details via its FOIA request, which outlines each alleged violation more specifically.

Napoleon conquers Harder Hall

05/03/2009

The Foundations Class 2009 collaborated this year on recreating the 1801 "neo-classic" painting "Napoleon at the Saint Bernard Pass," also known as "Napoleon Crossing the Alps," by Jacques-Louis David.

First-year BFA students worked on their own spaces of the 108-segment recreation without knowing what the final product would be. The recreation is 16 feet by 22 feet, dwarfing the roughly 7-by-8-foot original.

The original painting was created to commemorate French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's 1800 victory over Austria at the Battle of Marengo during the Napoleonic wars.

Bias Response Team holds event to battle hate speech

05/03/2009

The Bias Response Team organized an event May 1 at Openhym Residence Hall in response to the word ‘nigger’ being written on a resident’s door.

The event was announced at the April 29 Student Senate meeting by Diversity Director Matthew Brown. According to Brown’s announcement, the Bias Response Team requested that residents put a sign in their window to “support a movement to stop language similar to this.”
