New Student Senate president attempts change

03/19/2010

Ana Devlin-Gauthier was announced the winner of the Student Senate Presidential election on March 3 during the Senate meeting.

Devlin-Gauthier was elected with 53 percent of the vote, while Peter Nyitrai received 26 percent and Nathan Martell received 19 percent.

Upon announcement of her victory, President Devlin-Gauthier proceeded to run the rest of the meeting. The transition, which would be considered by some as being far from ceremonious, consisted mainly of Devlin-Gauthier jumping for former President Amos Mainville’s keys as he jokingly held them above her head.

Controversy over McGee Pavilion construction

04/18/2010

Construction projects in Binns-Merill and Harder halls began with controversy. Art and design students lost senior show spaces and Harder Hall staff lost the luxury of windows or, in some cases, their entire offices. Meanwhile the Alfred University community gained a large fence which bisects academic alley.

Approximately two and a half years from now, the outcome of this springtime construction project should be profitable for the colleges of engineering and art and design. Presently the entire university is trialing through the complications construction has caused.

02/13/2010

Approximately 250 members of AU's diverse community attended the Foundry Guild's “Pour for Haiti” fundraiser at the National Casting Center at Alfred University Feb. 6, raising over $5,000 for a student-run Haitian earthquake relief fund.

“I was really impressed with how many people showed up," student Chelsea Bouffard said in response to the success of "Pour for Haiti." "It was really nice to see an idea turn into something so magnificent!”

Proposed state cuts would increase budget deficit

01/30/2010

If Governor Paterson’s proposed Executive Budget for 2010-2011 passes as it stands, the College of Ceramics could receive a significant cut in funding, meaning more budget cuts for the University.

“It will mean more cuts, but it will be a different kind of cut,” AU President Charley Edmondson said.

No more delay, vote today

02/25/2010

Elections began yesterday after failed communication between the Student Senate Executive Board and the Student Senate Elections Committee resulted in a one-week delay for Student Senate president and vice president elections.

According to Kevin Carr, chair of the Elections Committee, the problem was the result of a "miscommunication" between Elections Committee members.

Prior to the missed president and vice president election, two elections had to be held for new Elections Committee members, since two Elections Committee members decided to run for president and vice president.

02/13/2010

Student Senate President Amos Mainville read President Charley Edmondson’s Feb. 5 program cut decisions at the Feb. 10 Student Senate meeting.

According to Edmondson's statement, these decisions are not all of the strategic cut decisions that are going to be made. Some decisions have stricter deadlines than others.

The Fiat Lux will follow up with more coverage on these cuts in the next issue.

The decisions so far are based on a proposal released by the Strategic Planning Council in December 2009, and are as follows:

No ROTC credit: a policy as old as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

02/11/2010

Toward the end of his Jan. 27 State of the Union address, U.S. President Barack Obama drew attention to the controversial "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy that in the 1990s resulted in the loss of credit for ROTC students at AU.

"This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are," Obama said referring to the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. "It's the right thing to do."
