Alfred University took down D’Youville in their first win of the season on Saturday in Buffalo.
Junior midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) scored the winning, and only goal for the Saxons off a pass from freshman midfielder Rachael Williams (Penfield, NY/Penfield). The play was made with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half.
First year student Emily Helsop said of the game “I could tell going into the game that everyone was excited and hungry for a win... We really worked as a team which gives us confidence for the rest of our season.”
Alfred (1-3-0, 0-0 E8) was outshot by D’Youville 13-5, and held a 7-4 advantage of shots on goal. Junior goalie Ashley Frazell (Newton, NY/Newton) made seven saves in the game for Alfred. Emily Barrera, defense, says that in order to continue success the team needs to "Keep our composure and keep the momentum going our way after the first win." Barrera, who is unfortunately benched due to a knee injury, went on to say "they played very well" and "we pretty much dominated the game," Barrera continued "We worked to get that first goal in the back of the net and continued to shut them down the rest of the way." AU's women's soccer team has started the season off on a good note, and with proper support from the Saxons will make sure the team ends the season even stronger then it started.
Alfred 1-3-0, 0-0-0 E8) will play again Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. against host Hilbert.
