That's My Jam: A look into Brian Wilson's "Imagination" (1998)

09/12/2011

It makes sense for a newspaper to tell you about new album releases and here at the Fiat Lux, I like to believe we do that very well.
But, from time to time, we music fans stumble upon a gem that happens to have been released years ago.
That’s what this column is dedicated to: long forgotten secret successes.
My Jam of the Week comes from Brian Wilson’s second solo endeavor, “Imagination.”

New server to help alleviate Internet woes

09/11/2011

In response to saturated Internet connections on campus, work has been fast tracked on a new server to ease bandwidth concerns in residence halls.
Gary Roberts, director of Information Technology Services, says he anticipates the new hardware to be in-place by mid to late September.
“During the last decade, Internet use exploded on-campus, and we have managed to respond. However, the last three years have experienced exponential growth in the use of Internet,” Roberts said.
In other words, demand began to out-grow the supply.

AU women's history mural unveiled in WLC

05/01/2011

Women's Leadership Academy dedicated a mural in honor of the men and women that played a crucial role in Alfred University's history of women's equality Friday evening at the Women's Leadership Center.

The mural, created by WLA members Kevin Carr and Ali Garcia, serves as a capstone project that cumulated a semester of research and painting.

AU Track and Field teams place 4th in Empire 8 action

04/18/2011

Rebecca Graudons and Jordyn Larkins led the women’s outdoor track and field team, while Shawn Ross led the men’s team to fourth place finishes in the Empire 8 Conference championships Sunday at RIT.

Freshman Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) won the pole vault, with an AU record-setting vault of 3.30 meters. The feat qualified her for the ECAC outdoor championships May 19 and 20 in Bethlehem, PA. Sophomore Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Allendale-Columbia) also took home a women’s title for the Purple and Gold with a 200-meter dash in 28.27 seconds.

Judson to redesign leadership at AU

04/18/2011

In order to expand Alfred University leadership opportunities on-campus, Kathy Woughter, vice president of Student Affairs, announced a reorganization of the Women’s Leadership Center to the Student Senate floor April 6.

The reorganization will include a name change from the WLC to the Beth Robinson Judson Center for Leadership, in honor of the late alumna, trustee and founding member of the original leadership center.

A2A takes flight

04/03/2011

Alfred to Asia, a yearly event held at Alfred University, brings a little slice of Chinese, Japanese and Korean culture to the student body by sharing dances, music and other forms of entertainment with the audience.

A2A, as it is commonly referred to, centered around the theme of “ISSO Airline” this year, and jokes parodying in-flight entertainment and policies were sprinkled through out the show. For example, the show started with performers dressed as flight attendants demonstrating the emergency procedures on an airplane as the '80s hit, “Safety Dance” played in the background.

Decades Day

04/03/2011

In the end, the 80’s just weren’t enough. As a way to increase interest in the Chemistry Club’s 80’s Metal Moustache and Teased Hair Competition, the club expanded their repertoire to include all decades above the 1920’s in what they are calling the Decades Day Competition.

The concept is simple. On April 1, the Chem Club encouraged the student body to come to Nevins Theatre, decked out in the most ridiculous outfit that defines the era of his choice. A photo shoot of the participators followed.

Opossum smashes Fox's window

03/30/2011

A mutant opossum tossed an AU student through a Fox’s Pizza Den window late Thursday night after the bars closed on Main Street.

Student witnesses say the situation escalated when the mutant opossum discovered his favorite Alfred restaurant, Fox’s Pizza Den, was not open at 2am.

The mutant opossum was seen pounding on the restaurant’s window demanding service at 2:15 in the morning. When a passerby told him the restaurant was closed, the opossum reacted

Carousel spins its way into AU music scene

03/22/2011

The Alfred University Student Activity Board left a floater in the Knight Club when the grunge/alt band Carousel took the stage Saturday night.
While audience members claimed it was a good show, this writer thought otherwise.
Carousel is the kind of band that makes up for their lack of musicianship and song writing ability by turning up the amps and hoping you cannot hear their glaring flaws. Like lack of talent, for example. The arrangements lacked inspirations and the melodies lacked creativity.

Two arrested in March 1 mugging

03/21/2011

Two Alfred State College students, Paul Moore Jr. and Damoni Hall, were arrested in connection with the alleged assault of Alfred University student Nick Lambrose, March 1.

In response to the Alfred Police Department report filed, Alfred University's Dean of Students Norm Pollard issued persona non-gratis to Moore and Hall. If seen on campus, they will be arrested for trespassing. The offices of Public Safety, Residence Life and Student Affairs were all immediately notified.
