Group proposes changes to make AU more gender neutral

02/26/2010

With help from the Division of Student Affairs and the Workgroup on Transgender issues, AU resident halls are in for a co-ed change, with special attention to the bathroom facilities.

According to an article from The Department of Student Affairs, “It has been the charge of the Workgroup on Transgender issues to thoroughly review the needs of transgender students as they relate to a variety of areas within Alfred University."

Maluca

01/29/2010

Maluca, the new upcoming Latin American artist on the scene, will be performing for free for AU students this Friday, Feb. 5 in the Knight Club.

Maluca was born in the Bronx, and raised by Manhattan Dominican parents. While she was growing up, traditional Latin style music, like bachata and mambo, played a big part in her life and greatly influenced her own style of music. Combining the music of her ancestors and American pop culture music of the 90's, Maluca was able to create her own brand of “electronic mambo.”

Fourteen pedals, one new tour

10/16/2009

Editor's note: The bike's actual cost was $8,700, not $87,000.

The seven-person Conference Bike made its first, excellent impression on AU students, faculty and prospective students Oct. 8 at Susan Howell Hall.

“We had a great time," said Cindy, mother of Brandon Cook, a visiting student. "It’s really neat on a number of levels. It sets Alfred apart,” .

According to conferencebike.com, “the CoBi-7 is a tricycle pedaled by seven riders sitting in a circle. One person steers while everyone is free to pedal or not as the bike moves effortlessly [excluding hills] along.”

Far too many dead flies are on the wall at AU

01/13/2009

Alfred locals that are able to escape outdoor critters, such as skunks and crows, are often faced by a greater nuisance indoors: flies, and lots of them.

At AU this problem can be observed best in buildings such as the Miller Performance Arts Center, or McLane Physical Education Center where piles of dead and dying flies cover the gym floor, according to AU Junior Danielle Cooper, a women’s basketball team member.

“We run over hundreds of dead flies almost every practice,” she said.
