Shenanigans in Alfred

02/25/2011

It’s midnight on a Friday and downtown Alfred comes alive for the weekend. Only two more hours until everything closes. Everything in town, except for B.B. Shenanigans, which will stay open for an hour longer.

A customer comes in and cracks a joke at the modestly familial Blake Brown, Shenanigans' owner. The owner laughs, playing along with a genuine smile on his face.

“Our busiest hour is our last hour, from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.” Brown says. “Weekends are our busiest time of the week.”

02/12/2011

It’s the 1990s: the decade of the prescription drug boom. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jamie Randall, a womanizing pharmaceutical representative for Pfizer, who convinces doctors to prescribe his company's Zoloft instead of the decade’s controversial drug of choice, Prozac.

During one of his visits, Randall falls for Maggie Murdock, a patient with stage one Parkinson’s disease, played by Anne Hathaway. Murdock, at first, displays immunity to Randall’s charms. The two end up having liaisons with no strings attached, but one eventually falls for the other.

What’s New with Swine Flu?

10/28/2010

This year the Wellness Center has not had as many people come in with H1N1 as the year before.

According to Pam Schu, last year the Wellness Center saw around 107 cases. However, there is a problem with reporting numbers when estimating how many people within the whole campus suffer from this illness.

“Not everyone with symptoms comes to the Wellness Center to get them checked out,” says Schu.

The symptoms are similar to the common cold or mild flu-like symptoms, which is what makes diagnosing swine flu tricky.
