Faculty Soapbox: A perfect storm

02/27/2010

In this column, I want to talk a bit about American politics, the banking industry and proposals to regulate this industry, because I believe that Americans are about to be the victims of a perfect storm in this area of the economy. As is often been the case, this storm will hit without much warning---other than that provided herein. To really perceptive students of American politics it is increasingly clear that a number of forces are moving American taxpayers, voters and investors toward a free-for-all without parallel in American history.

Alfred’s most eligible auctioned for a good cause

02/25/2010

The Valentine’s Day Date Auction held on Feb. 13 in Nevins Theatre seemed to be quite a success, though it did begin a little later than scheduled.

“We really didn’t know what we were expecting,” said Emily Dowd of the auction. “It just happened and fell into place at the right time.”

The auction is not a yearly event here at AU, but it has occured before. Dowd says that the date auction was inspired by a scene from the musical Oklahoma and it was her idea to put it together.

Love is all that matters

02/11/2010

There is nothing more appealing, deceptive and wondrous than falling in love.

Our little Alfred harbors unique lovers of every age. We may have an idea of what their love is like, but behind the well-dressed professors and the seemingly shy peers, there is much more than meets the eye.

Hearts out to Haiti

01/30/2010

The earthquake that devastated the capital of Haiti on Jan. 12 is still reverberating in the collective minds and hearts of both the world at large and the microcosm of Alfred University.

What the Duvalier is going on in Haiti?

01/29/2010

Haiti, the first independent state of Latin America, began its tumultuous history under French and Spanish colonization as early as the 1500s. Sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, it is the least developed country in the Americas according to the United Nations. After years of repression under the French-created slave trade, the country led the world’s one successful slave-based rebellion in 1804.

The Alfred Computer Guy: Buying a Christmas Computer

12/03/2009

As we ride with confidence into the New Year, the act of giving and receiving gifts weighs heavily on our minds. It is during these times that I am presented with the second-most frequently asked question by friends and family, “Where can I get a good deal on a computer for Christmas?”

What the PIRA is going on in Northern Ireland?

02/24/2010

The conflict in Northern Ireland, long portrayed as one of the most violent religious conflicts in modern times, has been brewing since the 16th and 17th centuries.

Alfred to Haiti

02/26/2010

Walner Edmond, a junior Bachelor of Fine Arts major in the School of Art & Design, has been supporting his father Thermoline Edmond and other relatives in Haiti since he received information regarding the earthquake. “I was helping a sixth grade basketball team when I got the call,” said Walner.

Although the United States and several other nations have provided aid for Haiti, the survivors are still in desperate need of help. “My dad told me he didn’t have a home, because the building he was living in collapsed,” said Walner.

The Alfred Computer Guy: Keeping your data safe

02/25/2010

Anybody who has experienced a hard drive crash or some catastrophic system failure knows about the importance of backing up their data, but how often do you think about the safety of your files in terms of “winding up in the wrong hands?”

The threat of data theft and the escalating consequences of losing client information are increasingly frightening prospects in the business world today. Hardly a month goes by without some incident report involving a stolen laptop that contained the personal records of customers, clients, patients, or colleagues.

The Alfred Computer Guy: Enter the touchscreens

02/12/2010

In the last issue of the Fiat, I addressed the disappointment I had with Apple’s new iPad. This drew ire from folks online, but I stand firmly by my opinions.

Rather than continue down this path of negativity, though, I thought it might be a good idea to expand on alternative products that might interest people looking for an iPad-like device, but without the limitations of a constrained OS.

What the Mogadishu is going on in Somalia?

02/11/2010

The African country of Somalia, now known for its modern-day pirates, was pinpointed as one of several states that deeply affected modern US policy on intervention on the African continent as a whole (notably reluctance in Rwanda and Darfur). It is one of several predominantly Muslim states in the region, and has been so for a considerable length of time. Remarkably, as the European powers began colonizing the continent in the 19th century, Somalia’s Dervish State resisted the invading armies on several occasions.

Study abroad: there's no reason not to!

01/30/2010

Director of the Writing Center Vicky Westacott, who taught the study abroad class during this past fall semester, would like to dispel the two most common myths about studying abroad: that it is too expensive and that you won’t be able to graduate on time.

“Your study abroad is just like a semester here,” Westacott said.

Amnesty International at AU: Maintaining liberties, education

01/30/2010

This past Wednesday, Jan. 27, a date denoting the liberation of the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, marked the UN’s 5th annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This semester a new student organization, Amnesty International at AU, has taken initiative.
